The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.
Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love one another.
An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The story commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Nuanced Portrayals
A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that arise in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
