McDonald's has taken down a holiday commercial produced via Artificial Intelligence following receiving significant public disapproval.

The short spot was produced via AI video tools and was initially released publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Viewer Response and Decision to Pull

Following its publication, commenters criticized the use of AI in the film. A number of called it "disturbing" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This incident serves as an key lesson as we investigate the appropriate utilization of Artificial Intelligence," said a representative from the company.

The commercial was created for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of scenarios that might go awry during the festive season, using the theme "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI in Advertising

Adverts that feature AI-created content have become a increasing phenomenon among prominent brands, particularly for the Christmas period.

  • Coca-Cola has also released consecutive AI-created Christmas ads.
  • Technical Challenges: As clips made with generative AI are more likely to degrade the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be about a few seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also provoked fears about automation in the advertising industry, with some commenters noting it might reduce work for actors.

Defense from the Production Company

Following the video's removal, a producer's CEO, Melanie Bridge, stood by the project.

Bridge claimed, the production process took "seven weeks" and involved generating "numerous versions" which were then shaped in post-production "in the same way we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "It was a finished piece."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's commercial was predominantly criticized, the reception for some AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a recent AI-generated Christmas ad from another major brand according to analysis achieved a 61% "favorable response" from the public.

However, other businesses have likewise encountered backlash for using AI in their campaigns. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that critics called "cheap" and "disturbing".

The episode highlights the evolving discussion within the advertising and creative sectors about the balance between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
